HalfaCon was a regional convention that began in 1973 to offer fans in the south a second convention halfway between their regular travelling convention, DeepSouthCon, which was first held in 1963 at Dave Hulan's house in Huntsville, Alabama but grew into a far more substantial event. It was held at least six times, the first instance in Atlanta, Georgia in 1973 and later in Louisiana, Alabama and Kentucky. Arizona seems like an odd state out here, but chair Don Markstein looked at hosting it when he lived in Texas. As HalfaCon had a unique bidding process where the first person to mount a credie bid wins it unopposed, he floated the idea among Phoenix fandom after he moved to Scottsdale and they ended up winning it for Bisbee in December, partly because Curt Stubbs's thirtieth birthday fell on the Saturday; presenting him with a "30 Musketeers" bar was the only programming item. The attendance was very small ("19 eventually showed up, not counting three under 5") because Bisbee was hit by a serious snowstorm that weekend. Those who did make it included Don Markstein, Curt and Mahala Stubbs, B. D. Arthurs and M. R. Hildebrand, Sandy Kahn, Mark Christiansen and probably Bruce Dane. |
